Digital Infrastructures in Contemporary Unauthorised Migration Industry

SolRoutes’ postdoctoral researcher Rassa Ghaffari presented part of her research on Iranian unauthorised mobilities at the Twenty-First Annual Conference of Historical Materialism ‘Countering the Plague: Forces of Reaction and War and How to Fight Them’ at the prestigious SOAS University in London, 7-10 November.

Rassa Ghaffari, who specialises in Middle Eastern studies with a particular focus on Iran, has been invited to participate in the ‘Politics of Asylum’ round table with a presentation entitled ‘Digital migration industry: The Unauthorised Iranian Migrants

Her paper discusses the diverse routes traversed by unauthorized migrants from Iran to Turkey and onward to the European Union. Within this framework, the role of gender is often under-evaluated, as migration and border studies remain predominantly gender-blind fields. By looking at the role of digital infrastructures in facilitating border crossings to and from Turkey, the contemporary role of Turkey as a migration and transit hub will be discussed. This aspect will consider how digital technologies, such as mobile applications, social media, and online communication platforms, influence migratory patterns, access to resources, and the negotiation of gender dynamics among Iranians (un)authorized migrants.
