From Tripoli to Sicily

November 29-30, 2024, at the Centro Operatori di Pace in Mazara del Vallo, for a significant event focusing on the rights and challenges faced by refugees in the Mediterranean region.

“From Tripoli to Sicily – Evacuating Human Rights Defenders from Libya” is the title of a meeting that took place in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, on 29 and 30 November. It was organised by the Convention on Rights in the Mediterranean, Refugees in Libya (RiL), and the Alliance with Refugees in Libya (ARiL), as part of a campaign promoted by RiL and ARiL with the aim of creating conditions for safely evacuating a group of migrant activists from Libya. These persons were arrested in Tripoli in January 2022 because they had publicly demonstrated for their rights. They were then held in the Libyan Ain Zara prison for 18 months, and eventually released in July 2023 thanks to the initiative and pressure exerted by RiL and ARiL. Various workshops. The meeting consisted of a press conference, a roundtable and a series of workshops on sea rescues, freedom of movement, the hotline with Refugees in Libya (an emergency telephone contact), and migrant women. Solroutes researcher Paolo Cuttitta contributed to the workshop on freedom of movement (“Libertà di movimento. Meccanismi di evacuazione sicura per le persone in movimento”).
